The V-22 Osprey is a multi-mission military helicopter used by both the Marine Corps and the Air Force.
The aircraft is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range and high-speed cruise performance of an airplane. The Osprey operates as a helicopter when taking off and landing vertically, but then the nacelles rotate 90 degrees forward once airborne, converting the V-22 into a turboprop aircraft.
The Osprey is regularly used for transport and rescue tasks, and can carry up to 32 soldiers. But, it can also be heavily armed, and can be equipped with an M240 machine gun or a 50 caliber M2 machine gun mounted on the cargo ramp.
However, all these capabilities don't come cheap, and the price of the V-22 Osprey has made it a controversial part of the US military’s arsenal. Each unit costs around $60 to $75 million… but if we include the development costs, the average cost increases up to $110 million per aircraft!
