NASA's Perseverance rover has finally landed on Mars, after travelling for almost seven months from Earth.
However, the rover did not travel alone. Perseverance was joined by a mini helicopter called Ingenuity. If all goes well, Ingenuity could be the first helicopter to fly on another planet.
The mini helicopter is just 19 inches tall. It has four large carbon fiber blades that spins in opposite directions. It is so small, that it was tucked inside the bottom of the Perseverance rover.
The team behind Ingenuity are not yet sure whether it is even possible for a helicopter to fly above the Martian surface.
What makes it hard for a helicopter to fly on Mars? For one thing, The thin Martian atmosphere makes it difficult to achieve enough lift. Because the atmosphere of mars is 99% less dense than Earth.
