19 kph equals approx. 11.8 mph. Definitely not the fastest Tamiya 1/10 buggy in the world but is it really the slowest ever made? Maybe a unit without ball bearings, or one of the older buggies, or even one of the Grasshopper II or DT-02 buggies also released with a 380 motor could actually beat it with their extra weight and get the title of the world's slowest Tamiya buggy ever made? Would love to hear if you have recorded even lower top speeds with your Tamiya.
Tamiya has never really been into supplying their kits or their RTR's (XB-models) with the fastest gearing and motor set ups. So please do not take this test too seriously. I love the Grasshopper for what it is. Well, up next is the perhaps fastest out-of-box-Tamiya ever made. Definitely not the fastest out-of-box RC car ever made but definitely a lot faster than many Tamiya RTR RC Cars ever made!
You can find many more longer and edited videos, with slow motion and music, of the Tamiya Grasshoppers and Tamiya Hornets in my channel.
The Tamiya Grasshopper 2005 (Tamiya 58346) is a re-release of the original Tamiya Grasshopper (Tamiya 58043) Assembly Kit from 1984. This is the Limited Candy Green Edition (Tamiya 84331) Assembly Kit from 2013.
This particular unit is a full-blooded Tamiya, bone-stock with the Tamiya 380 brushed silver can motor, stock Tamiya ESC and optional 2005 Tamiya electronics (Tamiya Adspec 27 MHz radio and analog Tamiya TSU-01 servo). Well, bone stock ... with the addition of ball bearings.
It is running on a 6S 7.2v NiMH Battery - which is comparable to the old Ni-Cad 7.2v batteries from the 1980's.
And the answer to the usual comment is no: I'm not gonna run it with a 540 motor and LiPo when the whole idea was to test the original bone-stock top speed that is close to the top speed of the many many bone-stock Grasshoppers that used to be around in 1984 and the 1980s. But if you want, check out an earlier GPS speed test of The Hornet (practically a Grasshopper) running with a 540 motor on a 2S and 3S LiPo and I'm sure you can find many, many faster Grasshoppers and Hornets here on youtube. Easy to upgrade.
