A maiden flight on a new model can go many different ways...and this definitely was an interesting one! Shortly after takeoff, the vertical tail began fluttering and got much more severe as it began to pick up speed in the downwind. Thankfully the pilot was able to save the airplane as quite often, especially if not assessed quickly, flutter results in the loss of a model. Flutter is a very interesting phenomenon and is a result of the interaction of the aerodynamic forces with the aircraft structure and dynamics and can be induced from a number of things, but typically a surface with insufficient strength or stiffness. If I had to guess, this may have been induced from the rudder due to a possible insufficiently strong rudder connection which then resonated into the entire vertical tail. It was shaking quite violently! Having landed the model safely, the pilot was able to fix the issue and flew the model again the next day. #closecall #maidenflight #b17bomber
