My RC Car started sounding horrible right out of the box about a week ago, and to be honest I wasn't 100% sure it was the slipper clutch 'till now but it definitely is what's causing that horrible grinding or whining noise. Usually this issue arises well into driving your vehicle really hard, for long periods of time and won't be a problem 'till much later down the road but in this case ours started right out of the box, brand new! No worries though as it CAN BE FIXED and most of the time it shouldn't cost a penny!
I took the RC Car body off, then the protective bits of the framing off so that I could access the slipper clutch. Most vehicles aren't this hard to access, but this older style of ZD Racing Stadium truck is. Still, after only about eight screws I could very easily access the slipper clutch, spur gear, and pinion gear assembly. I know, this might all sound a bit overwhelming if you are new to the hobby, and it once was for me too but in time, you will slowly learn the lingo and get the hang of this stuff, promise ;-) In most cases, you are even given a small wrench to tighten and loosen your slipper clutch but this vehicle didn't come with one, nor would it have fit the way it is assembled so I got creative. I got out my trusty Vice Grip Pliers and an allen wrench to hold it in place and turned to tighten my assembly up! Generally you want to tighten ALL THE WAY DOWN, then back the nut off around a full to maybe two full turns, depending on the manufacturers recommendations. In my case, because I did some damage to the set up in my bashing video I had to tighten it down a little more than I would have liked to. Simply put the RC back together and give it some juice and see if that solves your problem! 9 times out of 10 if you are hearing a whinging noise like we did in this video, it is your slipper clutch and can be easily fixed! Hopefully this video has helped just a bit and you can continue to enjoy the awesome hobby of RC!
