New Arrivals! RC Budget Ball Bearings and Budget Buggy On Road Wheel/Tire Sets! RC Hauls May 2017

Approx. 0.4 $/€ for a working rubber sealed Ball Bearing? 13 $/€ for a complete 1/10 2WD pr 4WD pre-glued Buggy Wheel/Tire Street Set? Seems affordable, but what do you get?

The ball bearings featured in this RC haul are no-name/brand pieces. The wheel/tire sets are from Reely, Absima, Carson and Kforce Racing.

If I only had a couple of working and running high-end RC models I would surely invest in some good sets quality ball bearings, wheels and on road tires. But as it happens, I've been bitten by the Tamiya Bug, and I own and run a fair amount of quite cheap and affordable Tamiya RC entry-level 2WD and 4WD buggies, vintage and new: Tamiya Grasshoppers, Tamiya Hornets, Tamiya DT-02s, Tamiya DT-03s, a Tamiya DF-02 and a Tamiya TT-02B.

As I also live in the city and do not have easy and quick access to great off road locations, I often choose to run these buggies on nearby tarmac locations. If I had to equip and maintain each and every with expensive on road tires, wheels and ball bearings each unit would cost double or even triple the original amount I paid for each car.

So I've started to search out the market for some cheap no-name ball bearings and on road tires/wheels.

Quite many of my Tamiya entry-level RC models (like the DT-02s and DT-03s) use a lot of 1150 (5x11x4) ball bearings. Some (like the Grasshoppers, Hornets and ORVS) also use an additional 850 (5X8X2.5) ball bearing in the internal gearing.

While original Tamiya metal sealed ball bearings can be aquired for resonably prices (20-30 $/€ for 10-20 pieces) a single rubber-sealed metal ball bearing from Tamiya can easily cost 5 $/€.

Normally I buy sets from different discount manufactures. A cheap set for a Tamiya entry-level off road model typically amounts to 10-15 $/€ and includes approx. 9-15 ball bearings. Which gives each bearing a price of 1 $/€, some times a little above, some times a little below.

Just to try something different I typed "1150 ball bearings" and "850 ball bearings" in an eBay search and got this result: 25 '1150' pieces. to approx. 10 Euro/USD (including shipping on eBay) and 10 '850' pieces. approx. 5 Euro/USD (including shipping on eBay). This gives each bearing a total amount of 0.5 $/€ pr even less. Worth to check out.

I have absolutely NO IDEA if these bearings matches the quality of other bearings. But it's worth a shot. And maybe a "free spinning test" and durability report later ... I would suspect a ball bearing from a brand like Tamiya to perform a little better, but I as I do not race this cars, nor run each and every model each day, these cheaper no-brand-substitutes is worth checking out ... for me personally ... what do you think?

I also wanted to try out some different on road tire and wheel sets. Maybe I might get lucky and find a set that suits my needs perfectly. So I ordered a bunch from conrad.com and a couple of sets from eBay. This is what I found and what you see in the video:

- Reely 1/10 2WD Buggy Wheel/Tire Set, All Terrain Rear Tires and Grooved Front Tires, Disc, 12 mm Hex, Approx. 16 Euro/USD 4 Pieces Set (front wheels do not fit the Tamiya DT-series). Listed as 82/39 (rear) but tires read 85/39 (rear) and 85/25.

- Reely 1/10 Buggy Street/On Road Wheels and Tires, 5-spoke, 12 mm Hex, Approx. 13 Euro/USD 2 Pieces Set

- KForce-Racing 1/10 Buggy Street/On Road Wheels and Tires, 5-spoke, 12 mm Hex, 40/90 (rear), 33/90 (front), Approx. 13 Euro/USD 4 Pieces Set

- Carson 1/10 2WD Buggy All Terrain Set, 5-Spoke, 12 mm Hex (rear) 1150 Bearings (front), Fits the Tamiya DT-Series, Approx. 15 Euro/USD 4 Pieces Set
