NASA’s Mars Ingenuity drone survived a close call that could have ended in disaster. During its sixth flight, a glitch in its camera system caused the drone’s onboard navigation system to malfunction.

Launched along with NASA’s Perseverance Rover, the small 1.8-kilogram Ingenuity drone is the first vehicle to perform controlled aerial flight on another world.

Over the last few weeks, it has performed six successful flights. In fact, the flights were so successful, that NASA recently extended the drone’s mission on Mars, to support the operations of Perseverance itself.

However, while it’s first five flights passed without any incident, its latest flight on May 22, was slightly more dramatic.
