Here's the difference between winter tires performing better on roads covered with ice, and winter tires that perform better in deep snow conditions. The ice tire is better when frequently driving on slippery secondary roads packed with ice, while the snow tire is better inside the cities when parking in deep snow, or when driving on mountain roads with frequent severe snowfalls.
When storing a tire, always protect it from direct exposure to sun rays. Direct sun rays and sun heat softens the tire rubber wall. A plastic bag is NOT enough to protect the tires from direct sun heat. Rather use a plywood board on top of the tire pile, or better yet, store them inside the shed or basement. If looking for used tires, always push on the sidewall (when deflated) see if it got too soft, or if there are cracks between the treads. I DO NOT recommend driving on winter tires all year round. For one, a winter tire will wear very fast in warm days above 10C (50F), it will wear 2-3 times more than an equivalent all season tire. Also, some winter tire compounds will harden if driven in warm weather - the rubber then gets harder and will have less grip on snow and ice. Here's how to find how old a tire is (how many years ago it was manufactured) https://youtu.be/8kr-7eIlANU
