In this video we go in to what it takes to land an RC airplane on water and take off! Typical airplanes that can land on water are one of 2 different types. A float plane consists of floats that attached to the airplane. A seaplane is an airplane where the fuselage is made to resemble that of a boat. The fuselage is designed to act as a hull.

The take off begins by placing the airplane on to the water facing the wind.( It is assumed that the plane is fully trimmed for straight flight. )The airplane will naturally want to weathervane in to the wind. Once in position, apply full up elevator and advance the throttle to full throttle. As the plane begins to climb on top of the water, begin to release the amount of up elevator. Once the plane is entirely on step or on plane, use minimal up elevator.

The transition of the airplane from sitting deep in the water to getting up on the step of the hull or floats happens very quickly. The amount of pressure you apply will also have to change quickly to adapt to the changing attitude of the airplane.

The landing approach begins by changing direction to land in to the wind. All landings must be done in to the wind. Upon final approach adjust throttle to allow the airplane to descent at a natural rate. Slow the decent rate by applying more throttle. When the airplane is a few feet from the water, use throttle and up elevator to control the decent rate until the airplane touches the water. It is very important that you do not stall the airplane on to the water.

Although it is very possible to land airplanes with no throttle input, it is highly recommended to always land under power.
