HOW TO LAND A radio controlled (RC) EDF JET ? (TAFT Hobby Quantum Biplane 90mm EDF JET)
If there is one really important thing I have learnt about flying RC jets it's that you can rarely make a good landing from a bad approach. My good friend Al let me fly his Quantum Biplane jet for the first time. It's a bit quirky in the way that it flies and being a first flight I didn't know how it would behave in slow flight. Despite using flaps you can see on the first approach I was too fast due to my descent starting from too high an altitude. Always be ready to abandon your approach if you are not confident of nailing the landing. I would certainly have overshot the landing strip and damaged the model if I had tried to land from that approach.

After going around I kept it low and below the tree line for the 2nd approach and went zero throttle much earlier to let the jet slow down, before making the final turn and adding power as necessary to allow the nose to come up. Despite this flying strip being quite a bad bumpy surface the landing was slow enough to ensure no damage was done. Al was quite surprised at the outcome and that this jet will land slowly. It's all practice and technique !
