Too slow? But maybe it's actually too fast? And can we make it slower? Here's a GPS speed test and a more beginner-friendly perspective of the top speed of the new WLToys 104001 1/10 4WD RC Car Buggy. Or in other terms: Out-of-the-box, new and bone-stock - let's see exactly how fast and how slow we can make the new WLToys 104001 Go!

You can check out the unboxing and see it off road and in slow motion here: https://youtu.be/V9pTwp1qr4g

More of my thoughts and personal opinion about the top speed of the WLToys 104001 below!

I just don't get it ... I see a lot of complaints and bad reviews when it comes to the top speed of the new WLToys 104001 ... I get it, it's slower than the 1/18 A959-B, the 1/14 144001 and the 1/12 124019. But for me, a 1/10 buggy with a transmitter with Throttle Dual Rate top and an adjustable top speed range from 8 kph (5 mph) to 41 kph (26 mph) seems pretty perfect for a stock set-up.

Sure, an RC car company can always set up a crazy gear ratio (and it sure can be a lot of fun with a fast ready-to-run vehicle) but for the beginner or/and youngster, after the initial fun, it will probably very soon end up in frustration, serious crashes, broken parts, over-heated electronics and a very limited battery and run time.

I say, better keep both the top speed and price down for some RTR vehicles, making them accessible for the beginner. Just my humble personal opinion. For the experienced hobbyist who prefer it faster, it's easy to upgrade to other motors, electronics, batteries or gear ratios. And it's easy to find other faster, more durable and more expensive RTR RC Cars.

For comparison, the stock out-of-the-box top speeds for 1/10 buggies with brushed motors from other brands like Tamiya and HBX is usually somewhere below 41 kph ... often closer to 30 kph than 40 kph. So 41 kph is actually a very high top speed for most RTR brushed 1/10 buggies. Luckily it got throttle dual rate so we can adjust the top speed and make it more beginner-friendly.

And yes, I also think it could be cool with a ready-to-run brushless version of the 104001. As long as the more affordable and brushed version is still available too.

More runs and comparisons coming up with the WLToys 144001, WLToys 124018, WLToys 124019 and WLToys 104001. Subscribe to follow along.
