Here is a thorough unboxing and first look at the new and improved HBX 12815 Protector 1/12 4WD Sand Rail Buggy/Truck: Brand New body design, shocks, drive line components and an extra set of batteries. And still under $100! And of course the new edition have the same other features of the standard edition: 4 x LED lights, 2.4G, full time 4x4, double wishbone suspension, metal differentials and full ball bearings. I know what I think. What about you?

I must say I am excited about this new Protector Edition from HBX! Not only does it come with a brand new body design that I really like (and that will do good on camera on upcoming running videos), but more importantly, for the driving experience, it actually comes with new and improved oil filled metal capped shocks and new metal drive line components. Exactly the two features that I personally would want to upgrade with the standard HBX Protector Edition. Well, and I definitely do not mind an extra set of batteries and some more run time either.
One could argue that the servo and ESC/receiver could need an additional upgrade, and the same could be said about the plastic drive axles. But if one wants to keep the original 390 brushed motor (as we will) there really is no need to upgrade anything further ... unless it breaks.
As far as I know the first edition of the HBX Protector was released in 2018, and the new one in the middle of 2019. At the day of publishing this video, both editions sell on Amazon at just below $100. Remarkable, since the new edition comes with a lot more value for the money.
The HBX Protector is officially specified to a top speed of 38 kph, which I doubt it will do, based on past experiences with this particular chassis, gear ratio and motor size. But time will tell in the upcoming speed test.
In the meantime check out some previous speed tests and other videos with the HBX Dune Thunder and HBX Survivor MT, which just as the Protector, are based on the HBX Survivor chassis. Definitely one of my favorite chassis' from HBX so far, in terms of durability and allround handling.
