The Dornier Do X was by far the largest aircraft in the world at the time. In design, it resembled a ship more than an airplane. In fact, it was a flying ship that took off and landed on water. The Do X was designed and built by the German Dornier works in 1929 and had a capacity for up to 166 passengers. More than any other aircraft of its time.
Equipped with twelve V12 cylinder engines, the airliner reached an average cruising speed of 175 km/h.
The RC aircraft variant of the Dornier Do X that can be seen here also has a remarkable 12 engines with combustion engines. The detailed replica of the 1:10 scale model airplane is a real eye-catcher due to its enormous size. Above all, the RC model impresses with its unusual design: a boat with wings that can actually fly. In order to prepare the RC airplane for flight, all 12 motors must be started individually with the manual starter.
After all engines are running, the model taxis to the start and takes off. The RC Airliner flies several laps over the airfield and also makes several low-level flights. The RC Dornier Do X can hardly be distinguished from the original in flight behavior. The RC model can fly very slowly without getting into a critical attitude. The 12 motors give the 60 kg RC Dornier enough thrust and a rich sound. After a successful flight, the RC Dornier Do X prepares to land and, despite a slight crosswind, comes back to the ground with ease.
