Cartoon Top Gun Jet ! Radio Controlled (RC) 'FATTIE' F-14 FIGHTER JET | Essential RC FLIGHT TEST

My first flights with the Fattie F-14 from our new friends at Enjoy2Fly. This kit is a cartoon inspired version of an F-14 fighter jet. In addition to the kit you will need a transmitter, receiver and 4S3500 to 5000 flight battery. The kit features retractable landing gear, the nose gear has gear doors. Also included is a gyro stabilisation system.

Assembly is very quick. Just follow the simple instructions. Glue is not included and I used UHU POR. CG is critical on this model so use the marks under the wings near the leading edge of the wing to get the balance correct before flying.

Full disclosure in this flight test. We had issues the first flight with the clearance of the propeller from the ground and the strength of the pins between the landing gear struts and the retract units. The ~3.5cm gap between the ground and tip of the propeller (when it is pointing down) makes it difficult for the F-14 to climb out on take off at a steep angle. We failed on first take off because the prop caught the ground a few times and destabilised the jet on the ground causing it to break a retract pin.

Second attempt after repairs and I did not touch the elevator stick. The prop still caught the ground but it got into the air. In the air after trimming out for level flight it was fun to fly and looks very distinctive in the sky. Everyone at the club found it very entertaining ! It has a relatively high stall speed so need to maintain 50% throttle at all times. Landing was fine. I managed to land the jet fairly flat. On my second flight (in a future video) I landed on verge of stall and broke a retract pin and the gear doors. We'll try again soon and explore use of the gyro which I didn't use on either of the first 2 flights because it flew well enough without !

WHAT I LIKED ?
Distinctive and looks great in the air
Fun to fly
Amazing that has retractable landing gear and looks clean in the air when they are up
Best operating from hard asphalt/tarmac runway

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ?
Not suited to operating off grass unless it is very very smooth surface.
Prop is too large. Needs to be replaced with a 1" smaller diameter prop with more pitch for more clearance to ground.
The retract pins are not wide enough. They bend and break too easily if operating off grass.
