On 19 October 2009, Bob Burt completed the maiden flight of his radio controlled Aeronca Champ. Weighing 35 pounds and a wingspan of 12 feet, it had three successful flights that day at Mead Field west of Omaha, Nebraska. In Bob's Words: The Aeronca was built from RCM plans. It is 141 inch wing span (1/3 rd) scale. Covering is Sig Koverall. Paint is Nelson paint. Radio- Futaba 2.4. Engine-Turnigy 52cc Gas turning a 22x8 prop. All metal parts were made by hand. Ribs are built from 1/8x1/4 spruce and 1/32 ply gussets. Like I stated all metal parts were hand made including the main gear which are spring loaded and the tail wheel gear. We flew it the first time with the top cowl removed to make sure the engine did not over heat. The next time I will put the cowl on and see how well it cools.
