The Saturn SL was sold from 1991 to the end of the 2002. What would the Saturn SL look like if made today? Let’s find out!
There are two main design features that makes the Saturn SL stand out - one being the rather long overhang in the front, the second being the unusually narrow positioning of the headlights.
These are two features that we need to bring into this redesign. The Saturn SL1 has a pretty typical 1990s American sedan styling. There is lot of bulging surfaces and roundness.
Today, this design language has changed and we’re now in a sharper time. This means we need to have surfaces with distinct lines and well defined edges and corners.
I’ve said it before, I think the next phase of car design will consist of large surfaces with less lines. I think graphic design will play a bigger role moving forward.
I decided to make the front air intakes triangular because the front end of the Saturn SL is already so unique, so why not build on that and make the air intakes unique as well.
It’s a simple car. It doesn’t have a shouty or loud design. That’s the idea I had with this redesign as well. A few well defined lines mixed with a few unique graphic features.
That’s what Saturn is to me and that’s what I wanted to create with this modernization.
